Mackerel
The north sea is empty, there stocks in the mid
Atlantic.
TIP: Choose handline-caught mackerel from
southwest England certified by the Marine
Stewardship Council.
Problems
In the North Sea, mackerel is still recovering from overfishing in the 1960s. This is despite the ban on overfishing in the south and central North Sea.
However, stocks are in better health than they have been, but in areas around Scotland they are still at risk.
Solutions
ICES recommend a continued decrease in fishing pressure in the North Sea.
Line caught fish improves sustainable fishing as undersized fish can be returned back to the sea alive, certified by MSC.
