Marine movies
In 2005 The River Ocean Foundation began two projects which add new content to the web site.
The first, called Coastal Images, enables young people to make DVDs about their coastal environments.
The second project, called First Take, is a showcase of innovative sea themed DVDs.
Coastal Images - A Teaching Pack for GCSE and post-16 students
This pack was designed to be used with GCSE and / or post-16 students in a variety of subject and specification contexts. While it assumes some access to (and proficiency with) both still and video shooting and editing facilities, and hence might fit into any of the available Media Studies specifications at GCSE / AS level, it could also be used within the context of specifications in Geography, History, Photography or Citizenship. While this material is based on the Brighton / Hove seafront, it could be adapted to any other coastal area which has been historically documented in photographs and film.
The aim of the project is to involve groups of GCSE / post-16 students in some or all of the following activities:
- researching the ways in which coastal regions have been documented in photography and film over the past 100+ years
- planning, scripting and storyboarding short video sequences and / or image + text displays
- and / or web pages which could document and reflect on differences between "then" and "now"
- scouting coastal locations which appear in historic images (still and / or moving)
- shooting new images (still and / or moving) of the coastal environment
- compiling and editing this new footage together with historic images to form finished works with a high degree of artistry, insight and "polish"
The full pack can be obtained by emailing us - we'll send you a PDF.
Here's some footage from the first school, Beacon Community College, W.Sussex, that tried out these techniques:

Lunch at porthleven
All UK surfers have one magical summer's day etched into their memory - this movie is about that day. Impactful, sustaining and richly layered, set in North Devon from dawn till dark.
The soundtrack has been especially written by Clive Reeve for the project and inspired by music from the late 1960s/early 70s.
Lunch at Porthleven, dinner in Devon. Thanks to the Porthleven surfers and to Captain Skelton the test pilot on the camera board at Croyde.
