The
Forest BeforeThe
forest is man made. Before the forest was there it was a field with lots of sheep
and cattle grazing on the land. It was owned by a farmer. How
The Forest Was ChangedThe
Eastbourne area wanted clean fresh water, so they decided to bore into the chalk
cliff. The water from the chalk cliff drained through to a tunnel below the cliffs,
and the water was carried away to people in Eastbourne. It was fine for a while
but then it started to taste funny. They found out that the cows and sheep were
leaving their manure in the water. To stop the animals from doing this the water
company planted the forest. The forest is owned by the water company and charges
a peppercorn rent of £1.00 to the Forestry Commission .
