Newhaven Harbour Station to Tidemills and Bishopstone

A walk of 2 - 3 hours only, but taking in a wonderful variety of scenery. From the wharves of Newhaven Harbour* where the massive Transmanche Ferry dwarfs everything, the walk explores Seaford Bay and the remains of the old milling complex of Tidemills*. There are specialist shingle plants to discover and shoreline birds on the mudflats and nearby fields - oystercatchers, flocks of lapwings and finches among them. When the route turns inland, you pass through the ancient village of Bishopstone* where archaeological excavations have revealed continuous settlement since prehistoric times. A steady climb to the top of Rookery Hill brings you to a ridgetop line of Bronze Age barrows and stunning views across extensive Downland to the east and the Ouse Valley* to the west. The last part of the walk takes you across the new Nature Reserve that will protect the Ouse Estuary from further development and preserves the habitat of the rare great crested newt and many resident and visiting birds.

Refreshments are not available on route, but can be found in Newhaven at the beginning or end.
