Internships

An Internship is like a modern-day apprenticeship. Through regular time with the organisation, it provides you with a deliberate learning experience and the chance to find out more about your chosen line of work. You could be a full-time or part-time student keen to gain some hands on experience in the field of your study, or you might be aiming to get into a new line of work and want to develop certain skills.
An internship at the River Ocean Foundation is a voluntary engagement, and as such it is unpaid. We are not able to offer assistance in finding accommodation, or seek work permits for interns, but we do reimburse expenditure related to your internship. There may be opportunities for additional learning through attending short courses and workshops specifically related to your internship with us.

At the start of an internship we will identify with you your areas of interest and/or how your current study topics relate to the work of the River Ocean Foundation. Together we will set goals that we aim to achieve during your time with us. You will receive training and support, and regular evaluation sessions with the co-ordinator to discuss progress and the next steps forward.
Goals could take the shape of specific research, an article for our website or the design and implementation of specific environmental education techniques.

If you are a student, any wishes for accreditation should be discussed with your study centre before you embark on your apprenticeship. The River Ocean Foundation is happy to discuss accreditation with your tutor or study centre and to work together towards a suitable programme.

An internship with the River Ocean Foundation would be ideally suited to individuals interested in, or students engaged in any the following subjects:

  • Managing Voluntary and Community Organisations
  • Environmental Science
  • Marine Biology
  • Wetlands
  • Water and Environmental Management
  • Environment, Ecology and Conservation
  • Scientific Research and Writing
  • Environmental Education

Internships can take place as a full-time placement over a few months (for example during the summer months), for one day a week for a year, or any other combination that works well for both parties.

If you are interested in an internship, please send a completed volunteer application form and a copy of your C.V, plus a covering letter explaining in some detail why you want to do an internship at the River Ocean Foundation, and when you would like to start. Applications should be addressed to the Volunteer Coordinator.
The next steps of the recruitment process are the same as for other volunteers, although the interview may also be attended by the River Ocean Foundation Coordinator.
